Adidas Hyperboost Edge

Adidas Hyperboost Edge

There is nothing better than putting on a pair of shoes that not only looks cool, but has a fun underfoot feel.

The Adidas Hyperboost Edge is exactly that. Not only does this thing look like a running shoe from the future, but it has one of the best underfoot feels I have ever experienced.

Adidas has been pumping out some good stuff lately. While the Evo SL wasn't really my cup of tea, the Hyperboost Edge is definitely my cup of coffee. Let’s dive into the shoe in this week's Wilde Wednesday Review.

We are living in the golden age of running shoes. Today's shoes are the best they have ever been, however, I feel that some brands are almost trying too hard. However, I feel that some brands are almost trying too hard to make their shoes feel distinct, which leads to too much going on underfoot. Some brands (sorry Brooks) don’t do enough, and their shoes feel like they’re stuck in the 2010’s. The Hyperboost Edge finds the sweet spot between innovation and simplicity.

The Hyperboost Edge has become my favorite shoe in my rotation. The upper fits well over my foot, however, the heel lockdown was a little tricky the first few runs. The lack of an extra eyelet made it tough for me to get a good lockdown, so much so that on my first run, I had to stop a few times to make adjustments. However, once I figured out the lockdown, I had no issues with slippage, and it fits my foot like a glove. People with narrow heels may want to proceed with caution, but with some tinkering, a sufficient lockdown can be achieved.

Once I got the lacing figured out, I went out and put some miles on this shoe, and now I can’t help but continue to pick up this shoe for my runs. The underfoot feel in this shoe is money. I’m not talking about finding a couple of bucks in your pants pocket after doing laundry; I’m talking about finding a hidden treasure chest full of gold doubloons on your way to redeem your winning Powerball ticket. The cushioning is excellent, but the bounce is what steals the show. If there were a score for cushion to bounce ratio, the Hyperboost Edge would get a perfect score.

I think this shoe can do just about anything. Easy runs, long runs, progression runs, and even tempos are all on the table. I've mostly used it for long runs and easy days, but every time I head out the door, I have to talk myself into grabbing something else.

The outsole doesn't look like much, but it's been holding up surprisingly well to the mix of road and urban trail that I am doing. It definitely is not a trail shoe, but if Adidas ever figures out how to put this foam in a legitimate trail shoe, my wallet is in serious trouble.

Whilst it's not the flashiest or fastest shoe, it's the most exciting shoe I have run in in years.

Overall, this shoe has an amazing underfoot feel and has been holding up well week after week. I think the biggest caveat is the upper and the lockdown. That being said, I was able to get it to lock down on my feet, and as a result, it's become my favorite shoe in my rotation. I would definitely recommend trying it on in the shop and testing it on the treadmill.

We are only halfway through the year, but the Hyperboost Edge has firmly planted itself in my Shoe of the Year conversation. If you've enjoyed shoes like the ASICS Superblast or Nike Vomero Premium, you owe it to yourself to try this one. The biggest hurdle is getting the lockdown dialed in, but once you do, you're rewarded with one of the most enjoyable rides on the market today.

Thanks for reading this week's review. Hopefully, I’ll see you in the shop soon to try the new Hyperboost Edge.

Until next week. Run Wilde. Run Flagstaff.
