Mount to Coast M1
Over the last few years, Mount to Coast has subtly established itself as an intriguing contender on the shoe wall. Personally, I've loved every shoe of theirs I've put on my feet, so I was excited when I first heard about the M1 last December at The Running Event.
After a long wait, and even a small delay in its release, the M1 has finally hit the shelves here at Run Flagstaff and is an exciting addition to the Mount to Coast lineup. With bigger cushioning built for bigger miles, Mount to Coast might just have its biggest hit to date.
With an emphasis on durability, innovation, and the unique demands of ultradistance running, the brand has consistently introduced products that challenge what we've come to expect from running shoes. The M1 might be its most impressive offering yet, with an updated midsole compound, aggressive Vibram traction, and an adjustable forefoot fit that creates a cushioned, protective, and accommodating experience unlike any shoe I've put on my feet before.
I absolutely adored my Mount to Coast H1, and it remains my favorite shoe in the store. The M1 features a new foam called JETCELL, an evolution of the CIRCLECELL compound found in the H1. In comparison, JETCELL feels a little softer and a little bouncier overall, providing an energetic ride without sacrificing the protection needed for long days on the trails.
The M1 is the rugged big brother of the H1. A little grippier, rougher around the edges, and no hand-me-downs.
Mount to Coast equipped the M1 with a full-coverage Vibram outsole featuring three distinct technologies: Megagrip, Litebase, and Traction Lug. The combination provides excellent traction across the variety of terrain we encounter here in Flagstaff, from loose volcanic rock to muddy singletrack.
In particular, I've been impressed with how well the M1 handles the mud following our recent rains. The traction inspires confidence, and regardless of what the trail throws your way, the M1 does a fantastic job of keeping you sure-footed.
The fit of the M1 is another aspect I truly appreciate. I've loved the fit of every Mount to Coast shoe I've worn, but the M1 feels especially dialed in for the trails.
The lockdown from the heel through the midfoot is spot on. I feel completely secure in the shoe without feeling claustrophobic. The toe box opens up beautifully, providing plenty of room for natural toe splay without ever feeling sloppy. It's a difficult balance to strike, particularly in a trail shoe, but Mount to Coast has nailed it.
Everything about this shoe hits the nail on the head for me. From the lively cushioning and dependable traction to the secure yet accommodating fit, the M1 is a true challenger to established favorites like the Hoka, Speedgoat, Nike Zegama, and Brooks Cascadia.
If you've had any of those shoes in your rotation, enjoyed other Mount to Coast offerings, or are simply looking to add another arrow to your quiver, the Mount to Coast M1 is well worth a look.
